Toto Wolff to Recalibrate Mercedes Team Rules Amid Rising Ferrari Threat

Inter-Team Rivalry Impacts Results

Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has admitted that the aggressive racing between teammates George Russell and Kimi Antonelli may need to be re-evaluated. The decision comes after the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, where a fierce battle between the two drivers potentially paved the way for Lewis Hamilton to secure his first victory with Ferrari.

During the Spanish Grand Prix, Antonelli and Russell engaged in a close fight, with Antonelli passing Russell in the closing laps before a mechanical issue forced a change in outcome, leading to a P2 finish for Russell. This follows a pattern of intense wheel-to-wheel combat, including a thrilling clash in Canada where Russell retired while leading, allowing Antonelli to claim the win.

The Cost of Competition

The primary concern for Wolff is the loss of critical time during these intra-team battles. In Barcelona, the squabble between Russell and Antonelli allowed Lewis Hamilton to gain ground. Wolff noted that the time lost during their fight potentially aided Hamilton's strategy, especially with the timing of the Virtual Safety Car (VSC).

Speaking to Sky Sports F1, Wolff explained: "They raced each other quite hard before George's stop and I think we lost four, five, six seconds to Lewis, and then obviously with the VSC, it changed the order."

He further emphasized the need for a strategic shift, stating, "We tried to race fair in the team game but maybe it cost us the win today and that's something we need to discuss with the drivers, how are we doing it if we're fighting somebody else for a race win. We're leaving lap time on the track and we need to discuss with them for the future."

Strategic Recalibration

With Hamilton now only 41 points behind Antonelli in the championship standings, the pressure on Mercedes to optimize their race strategy has intensified. Wolff believes that while the drivers' competitive spirit is a positive, it must be balanced against the broader goal of winning championships.

"I've always said that there is a third party now getting involved in the championship fight, constructor and driver," Wolff added. "And in that respect, we will discuss internally with the two drivers how we want to handle a situation where we risk holding each other up. And I think it's not going to be a problem. It's just maybe we need to recalibrate."
