Napoli and Barcelona monitor Tottenham's Lucas Bergvall ahead of January window
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lucas Bergvall is back on the radar of Europe's elite, with Napoli and Barcelona both closely monitoring the 20-year-old Swede ahead of the January transfer window.
The midfielder had previously been linked with a move to Serie A during the summer, when his future at the north London club looked deeply uncertain. Bergvall ultimately stayed at Tottenham, but his long-term position remains far from secure.
According to transfer expert Niccolo Ceccarini, Napoli want to sign a midfielder in January primarily because they are at risk of losing Andre Frank Zambo-Anguissa, Stanislav Lobotka and Kevin De Bruyne in a short space of time. That exodus would leave the Partenopei badly short in the middle of the park and has directly led them to track the Tottenham man, who could be allowed to depart in January.
The potential scale of Napoli's midfield rebuild is significant. In Serie A 2026-27, Lobotka had made 7 appearances with 1 goal, while De Bruyne had contributed 7 appearances, 3 goals and 1 assist, per FotMob data fetched on 24 October 2026. Replacing that level of output — alongside Zambo-Anguissa's ballast — explains the club's urgency.
Apart from Napoli, Barcelona are also interested in Bergvall, though clubs are expected to face an uphill task to prise the talent away from Tottenham mid-season.
Bergvall in need of minutes
The Swedish international joined Tottenham with significant promise, but due to the club's instability, things have never gone entirely to plan. His development has stalled and he is not a regular under head coach Roberto De Zerbi.
"That should be reason enough for him to actively seek a departure and Napoli could be the right place, as they will hand them regular minutes next season onwards," the report notes.
The latest interest represents a remarkable twist on Bergvall's recent past. On 12 September 2026, the midfielder signed a new Tottenham contract and insisted the club were "building something great" despite a winless start to the Premier League season, seemingly ending a summer of speculation over his future. Whether that commitment survives the January window now looks increasingly open to question.
