Tim Southee backs Bhuvneshwar Kumar to repay India recall with control and class

Former New Zealand captain Tim Southee has thrown his weight behind Bhuvneshwar Kumar's return to India's T20I set-up, insisting the seasoned seamer has earned his recall through skill, discipline and an Indian Premier League campaign that proved class can endure.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar celebrates a wicket for Royal Challengers Bengaluru

Southee, one of the most respected swing bowlers of his generation, said the 36-year-old pacer had done everything possible to force his way back into the national side after a four-year absence from international cricket.

“He has done everything he possibly could to deserve another call-up. He is a very skilful, experienced bowler who knows his game better than ever before,” Southee said of the pacer, who took 28 wickets last season at an economy rate of 7.92 for IPL champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

The former New Zealand skipper believes the time away from the international arena could prove beneficial, allowing Bhuvneshwar to return with renewed enthusiasm and a clearer sense of his craft.

“He will be thrilled to have another opportunity, one he probably did not think was going to come. He can enjoy his time in the Indian jersey ... There is no reason why he cannot have a lot of success when he returns to international cricket,” he said.

Control in an age of raw pace

In an era increasingly captivated by raw pace and spectacular variations, Southee argued that Bhuvneshwar's greatest asset is control. His ability to harness the new ball, maintain discipline through the middle overs and close out innings makes him a valuable resource that India can lean on.

“He'll be energised by the opportunity to play for India again. He's a very experienced player who has bowled as well as ever to earn this recall,” Southee added.

Southee tips Siraj for New Zealand success

Southee also backed Mohammed Siraj to flourish on India's upcoming tour of New Zealand, highlighting the energy and relentless work ethic the fast bowler brings to the attack.

“There is a lot to like about Siraj. The energy he brings, the way he runs in all day and the type of bowler he is, there is no reason why he cannot have a lot of success in New Zealand,” he said.

India's five-match T20I series in New Zealand begins on October 22, 2026, with the tour broadcast live and exclusive on the Sony Sports Network and Sony LIV.
