ETPL key to Ireland's next leap after landmark win over India, says CI chief

ETPL key to Ireland's next leap after landmark win over India, says CI chief

Cricket Ireland (CI) has been buoyed by the team's stunning upset win over India, the world's No. 1-ranked T20I side and reigning world champions. The board has now set itself bigger goals, with CI Chair Brian MacNeice emphasizing the crucial role of the European T20 Premier League (ETPL) in the nation's cricketing development.

"Well, it's obviously our first victory against India, so that's a very, very significant milestone. It's something I wouldn't underestimate in terms of the lift in confidence it gives everybody. It also showcases the talent that we have. So it's a very, very significant result. Our ambition is to continue to be competitive at the highest level," CI Chair Brian MacNeice told Cricbuzz on Saturday.

Ambition to Qualify for All ICC Competitions

"Our target is to qualify for all ICC competitions, both men's and women's. We don't just want to qualify - we want to be able to compete when we're there. That requires us to play more cricket, more consistently, at a higher level. That's why the European T20 Premier League (ETPL) is so important. It gives our players the opportunity to compete at a higher standard, so that when they do play in ICC World Cup events, they're ready to compete," MacNeice explained.

"Yesterday showed that the talent is there. What we need to do is provide the platform for those players to have as many opportunities as possible to play with and against the best players in the world. I have no doubt whatsoever that, when they get those opportunities, they'll show just how good they are and continue to grow and develop in the way you saw yesterday."

The Impact of County Cricket Changes

After Ireland became a Full Member nation of the ICC, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) stopped allowing Irish cricketers to compete as domestic players in county cricket. They are now classified as overseas players, forcing them to compete for fewer spots against stiffer competition. MacNeice believes the ETPL will provide the kind of opportunities Irish players now need.

"As I said, it's important for our players to have the opportunity to play at the highest level as often as possible to continue their development. It's up to us to find solutions to make that happen. The ETPL is one part of how we plan to do that. It's something I know the players are super excited about. What it does is provide additional, high-level competitive cricket for them to play and continue developing as professional cricketers. And again, it puts them in a position to compete with the best in the world," he stated.

ETPL: A Platform for European Cricket Growth

The ETPL will be held in August-September. MacNeice explained the reasoning behind the league's creation: "For two primary reasons. First, we know there is a demand for top-level cricket right across Europe. Second, we want our players to play against the best in the world as often as possible."

"It's the perfect platform to achieve both objectives. It's very much part of our strategic plan for providing opportunities for our players. We have other strategic initiatives as well, but ETPL is a critical component of the strategy for Irish cricket and for European cricket."

"Indeed, I think it's a real positive for the game globally. Because if cricket in Europe continues to grow, develop and become stronger, then that's got to be good for the global game. I'm really excited about the impact ETPL can have on the global game by strengthening European cricket and, in turn, strengthening cricket worldwide."

Beyond England: The European Cricket Landscape

MacNeice also emphasized that there is more to European cricket than just England cricket. "One hundred percent. On a whole host of different dimensions. In terms of the player talent pool across Europe, you've seen in recent ICC events that Irish, Scottish, Dutch and Italian players have shown they're more than capable of going toe-to-toe with some of the best countries in the world."

"What we want to do is use the ETPL as a platform to really supercharge the development of cricket across Europe, increase its visibility from a broadcast perspective, showcase the talent that exists and provide opportunities for players to aspire to do what the Irish players did yesterday," MacNeice concluded.
