East Zone steamroll North East to book semi-final spot

East Zone powered into the Duleep Trophy semi-finals with a comprehensive innings-and-210-runs victory over North East Zone, sweeping them aside in a display of left-arm spin mastery at their own pace.

Resuming their innings on 7/0 and still 349 runs adrift, North East Zone improved marginally on their first-innings total of 111 but could still not muster 150 in their second dig. Pheiroijam Jotin top-scored from No.7 with 39 off 75, his resistance complemented by No.10 Akash Choudhary, who faced 50 balls for his 27 to stretch the innings after the side had slipped to 90/8 by the 35th over.

Left-arm spinner Anukul Roy once again did the heavy lifting, finishing with a five-wicket haul — the seventh of his first-class career — as East Zone's trio of left-arm spinners shared eight wickets between them. Anukul's fellow spinner Shahbaz Ahmed continued what he described as a 'dream game', accounting for opener Joseph Hoengthakchu, while Portsmouth Sooryayanshi also struck twice, removing Kishan Lyngdoh and Immanuel Lemtid in the same over.

Captain Ishan Kishan had a busy afternoon behind the stumps, taking four catches and effecting a stumping.

Shahbaz's career-best 167 takes the honours

Despite Anuki Roy's seven-wicket heroics in the match, it was Shahbaz Ahmed who took home the Player of the Match accolade for his career-best 167 and four wickets across the contest. It capped a superb all-round performance that underpinned East Zone's emphatic progress.

North Zone carve out late edge in tense chase

Meanwhile, on the other quarter-final front, the final 33 minutes of Day 3 delivered a late twist as North Zone came from behind to rattle what had looked like a comfortable West Zone chase in Hyderabad — snaring four crucial wickets to leave West Zone requiring 67 runs with just three wickets in hand.

Musheer Khan, dreaming of a century, had looked set to steer West Zone home alongside East of Ruturaj Gaikwad until a sudden urgestion for a sharp single saw Gaikwad run out — for the first time in his first-class career. The pair had forged a 111-run partnership that appeared to put West Zone in cruise control, with Gaikgad reaching his fifty in quicker than run-a-ball fashion on a pitch offering plenty of turn.

The run-out flipped the script. Less than three overs later, Musheer eventually falling attempting a one-handed sweep, getting a nick off the toe-end as the ball kicked and turned appreciably. Two further wickets followed, West Zone relinquishing the ascendancy built on the Musheer–Gaikwad alliance. Earlier Musheer had picked his slots and attacked the quick bowlers on the leg-side, clubbing a couple of sixes in counter-attacking fashion, and swept spinners with typical abandon — but it was that very shot that brought his end.

Urvil Patel remains at the crease, with Shardul Thakur and Tanush Kotian to come next and Tushar Deshpande also capable with the bat. But the manner in which Abid Mushtaq, wicketless until then, drew turn to send back Shams Mulani and Mukesh Choudhary means West Zone will take a fraught route into the final morning.

North Zone rebuild through the middle order

Earlier, North Zone's Ayindran pa Badoni struck fifty and Nishant Narbo contributed 44 from No.7 as they negotiated a difficult passage to post 222 in their second innings. Beginning the day on 147/4 and sliding to 188/7, three six-es from Krishna Dhokar helped them limp past the 200-mark. Shams Mulani and Kotian shared eight wickets between them on a grip-laden surface.
