Russell accepts Antonelli title is ‘a matter of when, not if’
Russell says setbacks have tested his resilience
George Russell has conceded that he is no longer in contention for the 2026 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship, and believes Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli’s first title is now only a matter of time.
“Whether it’s this weekend or next weekend, it’s a matter of when, not if, he clinches it,” Russell said ahead of the United States Grand Prix. Antonelli could secure the championship this weekend, depending in part on Russell finishing ninth or lower.

Russell began the season strongly, but car compatibility problems and reliability setbacks hurt his results as Antonelli’s advantage grew. Russell did win in Austria and Azerbaijan, yet upgrades from rival teams have also narrowed Mercedes’ edge.
The Briton said the difficult run forced him to consider how he would respond to poor performances and misfortune. “I can at least be proud of myself that I’ve always put up a fight,” he said, adding: “This won’t be my last shot when I’ve got a car beneath me that can fight for victory.”
Focus on performance, not the standings
Russell said his main concern during the season was recovering his own performance, rather than the championship itself. He described the campaign as one that had “very much tested my character and resilience” and said the experience would help him in the years ahead.
Both drivers are set to remain with Mercedes in 2027. Russell said he intends to race for many more years and is determined to bounce back from the season’s blows. “You can’t give up when you’re being kicked to the floor,” he said.
