Sources at both Arsenal and Newcastle United suggest that the long-running chase for Brazil international Guimaraes is now reaching its end game. While Newcastle have never wanted to sell the midfielder, the growing feeling on both sides is that a transfer may now be inevitable. Guimaraes flew to Spain yesterday to join his Newcastle team-mates at their La Manga training camp, but the uncertainty surrounding his future continues to cast a shadow over the club.

As for Vinicius Jr, Arsenal's hopes of signing the 26-year-old still hinge entirely on the outcome of his contract-renewal talks with Real Madrid. The Brazilian reported back to the Spanish capital on Monday after his post-World Cup holiday, with a meeting scheduled this week between Madrid and the player's agents to discuss an extension.
