Antonelli Takes Commanding Victory at Spa

Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli delivered an impressive performance to win the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps, extending his championship lead to 204 points. The 2026 season leader finished ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who battled hard in the closing laps to secure second place, just 1.952 seconds behind.

Drivers Slam Confusing 2026 Engine Regulations

Despite Antonelli's commanding performance, the race weekend was dominated by criticism of F1's baffling new car regulations. McLaren driver Oscar Piastri didn't hold back in his assessment.

"It sucks. I can't really say it any other way than that," Piastri said. "When you've got qualifying grids decided by computers behaving or misbehaving … it's a pretty crap way of going racing."

The controversy centers on how the 2026 engine control units automatically study driver behavior on one lap, then adjust electrical energy deployment for top speed on subsequent laps. Teams cannot simulate this process — the engines make these decisions autonomously.

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella confirmed the issue affects multiple teams: "This seems to be pretty much the same across the two Mercedes cars. When you overlay Antonelli and Russell, it looks like Lando and Oscar."

Legendary Tracks Neutered by New Rules

The regulations have created a paradoxical situation where circuits previously known for producing processional races, like Barcelona, now deliver exciting competition, while legendary tracks like Spa have been rendered dull.

At Spa's iconic Bus Stop chicane, where drivers once braked from 200 mph down to 45 mph with thrilling variation, every lap now looks identical. Cars deplete their engine energy in the third sector, forcing drivers to brake at the same point and turn in gently each time.

One observer noted: "Every lap, supposedly at the moment drivers should be at the ultimate limit of their speed in qualifying and therefore at high risk of errors, looked identical. And dull."

Questions Over 'Unaided' Driving Rule

The automatic engine adjustments have raised questions about F1 sporting rule B1.8.1, which states: "The driver must drive the F1 car alone and unaided." Critics argue that an engine deciding itself how much power a car should have violates this principle.

The hope is that rule changes planned for 2027 and 2028 will reduce these dramatic swings between exciting and disappointing racing.
