Rain rescues Essex as Glamorgan secure Division One survival

Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, venue for the rain-affected County Championship match between Glamorgan and Essex

Persistent rain wrecked Glamorgan's hopes of a final-day victory over Essex at Sophia Gardens, with only 21 balls of play possible before the match was abandoned as a draw — a result that confirmed Glamorgan's Division One status for another season following their promotion won in 2025.

How the contest unfolded

Batting first, Glamorgan piled up a formidable 505, built around Asa Tribe's 184 and Kiran Carlson's 107, with Billy Root chipping in with 59. In reply, Essex were skittled for just 129, as Akhter's figures of 5-107 proved the only bright spot for the visitors with the ball while Ul Hassan (5-14) and Ray Toole (3-21) ran through the Essex batting order.

Forced to follow on 376 runs in arrears, Essex staged a much-improved fightback through Dean Elgar's 108, Tom Westley's 65 and George Bell's 66, reaching 351-6 to trim the deficit to just 25 runs by the time the weather closed in.

A frantic 21-ball window

After a delayed start at 13:00 BST, Essex resumed on 331-5 and took 14 runs off Timm van der Gugten's opening over before Noah Thain hoisted Ray Toole's first delivery for six. Bell then fell leg-before to van der Gugten for 66 — his third half-century in as many matches on loan from Lancashire — but Simon Harmer had time to face only one ball before the rain returned, prompting umpires Alex Wharf and Mike Burns to call proceedings off shortly afterwards.

What it means for the table

Glamorgan finish sixth in the Division One table, while Essex end up eighth, courtesy of Leicestershire's points deduction for the match against Glamorgan in August. Essex supporters can also take comfort from the Championship playing condition that teams should lose all their match points for a poor pitch, whatever the additional sanctions decision may bring.
