Prasidh Krishna Retains IPL Purple Cap After 2025 Season
Prasidh Krishna leads the IPL’s wicket-takers
Gujarat Titans fast bowler Prasidh Krishna is the current holder of the IPL Purple Cap after finishing the 2025 season with 25 wickets. The award is presented to the tournament’s leading wicket-taker at the IPL final, alongside a cash prize of INR 10 lakh and the competition’s other major individual honours.
How the Purple Cap record book has developed
The inaugural Purple Cap went to Pakistan’s Sohail Tanvir in 2008, when the Rajasthan Royals bowler claimed 22 wickets. Bhuvneshwar Kumar remains the only player to win the award in back-to-back seasons, taking it in 2016 and 2017 while representing Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Dwayne Bravo and Harshal Patel are the other multiple winners. Harshal Patel is also the only bowler to win the award for two different franchises: he topped the charts for Delhi Capitals in 2021 and Punjab Kings in 2024.
Harshal Patel owns the single-season benchmark
Harshal Patel’s 32 wickets for Delhi Capitals in 2021 remain the highest tally by a Purple Cap winner. Kagiso Rabada is the only other bowler to reach 30 wickets in a season, taking 30 for Delhi Capitals in 2020.
At the other end of the scale, Pragyan Ojha won the 2010 Purple Cap with 21 wickets for Deccan Chargers, the lowest winning total listed in the award’s history.
Franchises with the most winners
The Hyderabad-based Deccan Chargers and Sunrisers Hyderabad franchises have produced four Purple Cap winners: RP Singh in 2009, Pragyan Ojha in 2010 and Bhuvneshwar Kumar in 2016 and 2017. Chennai Super Kings also have four victories, supplied by Dwayne Bravo in 2013 and 2015, Mohit Sharma in 2014 and Imran Tahir in 2019.
Delhi’s franchise has three wins through Morne Morkel in 2012, Kagiso Rabada in 2020 and Harshal Patel in 2021. Rajasthan Royals have won twice through Sohail Tanvir and Yuzvendra Chahal, while the Punjab franchise has two victories through Andrew Tye and Harshal Patel.
Gujarat Titans’ two wins came through Mohammad Shami in 2023 and Prasidh Krishna in 2025. Mumbai Indians’ sole Purple Cap was won by Lasith Malinga in 2011, when he took 28 wickets.
Indian bowlers narrowly lead overseas players
Across the 18 seasons covered, Indian bowlers have won the Purple Cap 10 times, compared with eight victories for overseas players. The list includes established T20 performers such as Lasith Malinga, Dwayne Bravo, Yuzvendra Chahal, Mohammad Shami and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, while players including Jasprit Bumrah, Sunil Narine, Piyush Chawla and Ravichandran Ashwin have not won the award.
