Inside Johan Manzambi's meteoric rise from washing kit at Freiburg to Aston Villa stardom

In just two years, Johan Manzambi has transformed from an unknown teenager into one of European football's most coveted young superstars. Now a record-breaking summer signing for Aston Villa and a contender for the young talent of the year award at the upcoming Ballon d'Or ceremony, the 20-year-old forward's trajectory has stunned even the coaches who helped shape his early career.

Aston Villa forward Johan Manzambi

Having only made his senior debut for SC Freiburg in 2024, Manzambi is already mentioned in the same breath as Barcelona's Lamine Yamal, Real Madrid's Yan Diomande, and Manchester City midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi. Villa spent over £50m to secure his signature in July, making him the most expensive Swiss player in history and eclipsing Granit Xhaka’s transfer to Arsenal a decade ago.

Humble Beginnings and Relentless Work Ethic

Despite his meteoric rise, those who worked with him at Freiburg remember his grounding humility. Bernhard Weis, who gave Manzambi his debut for Freiburg Under-19s and now manages Freiburg II, recalled how the youngster would still return to the academy facilities for mundane tasks.

"He is playing for the professionals and he comes to us at the academy and brings some dirty clothes. He didn't have a washing machine so he comes here and washes some clothes," Weis told BBC Sport. "I would speak with him and then he would pick up some young guys from the under-13s, under-14s and take them to the train station. He would see the guys and say, 'come with me, I'll take you to the station', so they could get home. That's Johan Manzambi."

Weis admitted the Ballon d'Or nomination came much faster than expected: "The first half year at Freiburg it was not so easy for him, he's not so strong and he's not so stable. He put on five kilos and then he thought, 'now I go, it's the right moment, I will be faster and stronger'."

Breakout Performances on the Big Stage

Before his marquee move to England, Manzambi starred on the continental stage, being crowned the UEFA Europa League's Young Player of the Season after helping Freiburg reach the final against Villa. In the Bundesliga, his dynamism stood out among all players in his position, leading the league in 10-plus metre progressive carries (116), shot-ending carries (13), and fouls won (78).

His impact transferred seamlessly to the international stage with Switzerland, scoring three goals in four games at the World Cup following a debut against Mexico and an early goal against the United States.

Massimo Lombardo, Servette’s academy director who coached Manzambi at age 15, praised his inner drive: "It is a real surprise for many people, that he can do something special so quickly. For me, the difference he can make is because of his mentality, personality, enthusiasm and courage. He has the technical skills and tactical skills and the physical possibility now to perform in England."

Premier League Impact

Newcastle United had agreed a deal with Freiburg, but Manzambi ultimately chose Unai Emery's project in the Midlands. The forward quickly made his presence felt at Villa Park, scoring on his full Premier League debut against Tottenham Hotspur to seal Villa's first league victory of the campaign.

Weis believes Villa will provide the ideal platform for his continued development: "I think Aston Villa is the right club for him. He will play every time when he is fit and that's the right way. Then I think he plays two seasons at Villa and then he goes to the next step."
