Manchester United continued their pre-season preparations with a spirited comeback victory over Atletico Madrid at the Strawberry Arena. After conceding an early goal in the fifth minute, the Red Devils fought back to secure a 2-1 win, marking their second victory of the pre-season campaign.

The match saw United dominate the expected goals (xG) battle, recording 1.82 compared to Atletico's 0.64, and creating two big chances to their opponents' one. This momentum follows a mixed start to their preparations, which began with a 1-0 loss to Wrexham but was bolstered by a dominant 5-0 win over Rosenborg last week.

Carrick's Positive Outlook

Manager Michael Carrick was particularly pleased with the cohesion and attitude displayed by his squad. Speaking to MUTV, Carrick highlighted the importance of the team's internal dynamics as they build toward their season opener against Hull City on August 22.

"I enjoyed it, I thought there was a lot of good in things that we are looking to improve on," Carrick stated. "The spirit and the camaraderie is so important for the team, it’s great to see the boys getting on so naturally and enjoying each other’s company."

Carrick further noted that the blend of experienced and emerging talent was a highlight of the performance, adding that "senior players looking strong and fit, and the younger players doing really well" provided a strong collective foundation for the team.

Mbeumo Steps Up

With Benjamin Sesko sidelined due to injury and Matheus Cunha still on holiday, Bryan Mbeumo stepped up to lead the line. Mbeumo was the standout performer, scoring both goals in the second half and recording the highest number of shots (three) for United.

Following the match, Mbeumo expressed his versatility and willingness to adapt to different roles within the squad. "I have a lot to be able to play both positions. I can’t really choose," Mbeumo explained. "I have done great things on the right wing, but obviously some good things as a striker."
