Kapil Dev's deadpan one-liner steals the show as ex-players trade barbs over Asia Cup trophy row

The fallout from India's refusal to accept the Asia Cup trophy from ACC president Mohsin Naqvi continues to rage, with former players from both sides of the border queuing up to have their say.

India's refusal to take the silverware from Naqvi's hands has become one of the defining subplots of the tournament, and the debate shows no sign of cooling.

World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev provided the lightest moment of the entire affair, dodging a potentially explosive question about Naqvi with a witty one-liner that has been widely shared since.

The barbs, though, have flown thick and fast elsewhere. A former Pakistan batter has come out swinging in Naqvi's defence, branding India "arrogant" over the trophy snub, while an ex-India cricketer has fired back at Naqvi himself, asking pointedly, "Are they living in the past?"

Another World Cup winner went a step further, arguing that the trophy row is further proof that India "should not play Pakistan" at all.

With neither camp showing any appetite to move on, the Asia Cup trophy has taken on a life of its own — and the war of words looks set to run and run.
