Using an ATM? Five Everyday Mistakes That Can Empty Your Account

Withdrawing cash from an ATM is so routine that most people do it on autopilot. But according to a new consumer-safety guide, a little carelessness at the machine can put both your money and your bank details at risk. From blurting out your PIN to accepting a stranger's help, a handful of common errors are best avoided. Here are five things to keep in mind the next time you step up to an ATM.

1. Sharing your PIN

Your ATM PIN is meant to be private, full stop. Never share it with a stranger — even if they claim to work for your bank or offer to help you complete a transaction. Cover the keypad while entering the PIN so nobody nearby can see it, and remember that no legitimate bank employee will ever ask for it over a phone call or a text message. If someone does, do not share it.

2. Accepting help from strangers

If your card gets stuck or the ATM displays an error, someone nearby may suddenly offer to help. However helpful they appear, it is safer not to hand over your card or follow instructions from an unfamiliar person. If you run into a problem, contact your bank through its official customer-care number instead. Do not trust a stranger who asks for your PIN or tells you to re-enter it on their instructions.

3. Walking away without your card

When people are in a hurry, they often grab the cash and forget to take their card. Before leaving the machine, check that you have both your money and your card. If the ATM does not dispense the money but your account has still been debited, keep a note of the transaction details and report the problem to your bank. Don't assume the money is gone for good — according to the guidance, you should not presume that you cannot get it back.

4. Ignoring a suspicious-looking machine

If the card slot looks unusual, part of the machine appears loose, or the keypad seems damaged, it is better to avoid using that ATM altogether. Fraudsters may tamper with machines to steal card details, so any oddity is a red flag. If you notice anything suspicious, report it to the bank. It is also a good idea to cover the keypad while entering your PIN even when nobody appears to be watching.

5. Leaving before the transaction is finished

After withdrawing money, check that the machine has completed the transaction before walking away. If you are using other banking services, follow the on-screen instructions until the process is finished. If the machine freezes or behaves strangely, check your account through an official banking channel and contact your bank if necessary.

None of these habits requires special equipment or expertise — just a few extra seconds of attention at the machine. As the guide puts it, a little carelessness is often all it takes to put your money or bank details at risk, and a little caution is often all it takes to stay safe.
