Formula 1 Launches Sweeping 2026 Overhaul With Overhauled Engines, Active Aerodynamics, and Expanded Grid

Formula 1 has officially embarked on its most radical technical transformation in a generation, unveiling a massive reset for the 2026 season that simultaneously reinvents both car aerodynamics and engine powertrains for the first time since 2014.

The overhaul welcomes new automotive giants Audi and Cadillac onto an expanded 11-team grid, while introducing lighter chassis, movable active aerodynamics, 100 percent sustainable fuels, and a near 50-50 power split between internal combustion and electric energy.

A Complete Engine Revolution: Nearly Tripled Electrical Power

While retaining 1.6-liter V6 hybrid architectures, the 2026 power units represent a seismic departure in energy delivery. The costly and road-irrelevant Motor Generator Unit-Heat (MGU-H) has been scrapped. In its place, the Motor Generator Unit-Kinetic (MGU-K) has seen its electrical output nearly triple from 120kW to 350kW, providing roughly half of the car's total output alongside the combustion engine.

Drivers will also manage power via newly introduced cockpit tools. "Overtake Mode" replaces the traditional Drag Reduction System (DRS) as the primary passing mechanism, granting an electrical surge when trailing within one second of a rival. Drivers can also deploy "Boost Mode" strategically around a lap to attack or defend.

"Drivers will need to use energy more intelligently, more strategically, around the lap," said Mark Temple, McLaren’s technical director for performance. "There is a need to harvest energy more consciously and then choose where you use it."

Williams team principal James Vowles echoed the shift in driver demands: "It’s potent on traction and exits, it’s potent on recovery at the same time, and there will be games to be played that are a lot more strategic."

100% Sustainable Fuel

To support F1's pledge to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2030, all cars now run on 100 percent advanced sustainable "drop-in" fuels. Developing these bespoke chemical compositions posed significant engineering hurdles.

"What the regulations did was say, 'We don't know how you're going to do this, guys, this doesn't exist in the world... but it's going to be 100 percent sustainable,'" said Hywel Thomas, managing director of Mercedes High Performance Powertrains. "This is inventing whole new ways of creating these chemicals. It's a phenomenal task."

Ben Hodgkinson, technical director of Red Bull Ford Powertrains, noted the combustion challenges: "With sustainable fuels, you get some elements that are evaporating later than others, and it can be a bit of a challenge with combustion."

Aerodynamic Shift: Ditching Ground Effect for Active Wings

The ground-effect venturi tunnels that defined the 2022–2025 era have been abandoned in favor of lighter, nimbler chassis designs. According to the FIA, overall downforce has dropped by 20 to 25 percent.

To reduce drag on straights and balance energy efficiency, cars now utilize movable active aerodynamics on both front and rear wings. The wings automatically switch between "Straight Mode" (low drag) and "Corner Mode" (high downforce) at designated points on circuit layouts.

The reduction in downforce makes cars roughly four seconds per lap slower during early testing compared to the end of 2025, but makes corners that were previously taken flat-out much more demanding. "Where corner was a kink, it now becomes a corner," explained Nikolas Tombazis, FIA single-seater director.

Mixed Driver Verdicts and a Massive Development Race

The combination of lower cornering grip and explosive straight-line electrical acceleration has drawn varied reactions across the paddock.

Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton remarked that the car was "easier to catch" and felt "quite fun, like rallying a lot," while Mercedes driver George Russell noted that the raw straight-line acceleration was "probably the quickest I've seen an F1 car pass here in Barcelona."

However, reigning champion Max Verstappen expressed strong reservations regarding the driving dynamics, labeling the combined characteristics "anti-racing" and "not a lot of fun."

With testing shifting toward the season opener in Australia, teams expect aggressive early development. Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies predicted substantial volatility: "Take this performance swing, multiply by four or five — it’s probably what you are going to see this season."
