Champions League Matchday 2 smashes all-time scoring record with 78 goals
Record-breaking scoring feast in 2026-27 league phase
Matchday 2 of the 2026-27 UEFA Champions League has become the highest-scoring matchday in the competition’s history.
Wednesday 14 October produced 46 goals across nine games. Only two days of Champions League history have produced more, and both were on the manic final matchdays of league-phase action in 2024-25 and 2025-26. Tuesday 13 October added 32 goals, ranking joint 29th out of 869 days of Champions League action for goals in a single day.
Combined, the 78 goals from Tuesday and Wednesday make Matchday 2 of the 2026-27 UCL season the highest scoring in history, nine more than the total scored on Matchday 1 this season.
Opening fortnight sets new average
Across the opening two matchdays of 2026-27, there have been 147 goals scored in 36 matches. That average of 4.08 goals per game is the highest in a single season of UEFA Champions League action, with only 1959-60 and 1955-56 higher when including the old European Cup campaigns.
"We all love goals, right? Well, the UEFA Champions League is now the place to find them," Opta Analyst notes.
Format change and risk-taking
The analysis points to the 36-team league phase introduced in 2024-25 as a key driver. Under the old group-stage format between 2003-04 and 2023-24, 16 of 32 teams progressed to the knockout stage, 50%. Now eight sides progress directly to the last 16, with a further 16 given a second chance via a knockout play-off round, meaning 66.7% of teams exit the league phase.
That arguably leads to less jeopardy and enables teams to take more risks across their eight league phase games. Benfica last season lost five of their eight league-phase matches but still sneaked through to the play-offs in 24th place, proof that you can lose more than half of your matches in the new league phase and get through. Paris Saint-Germain have won the last two editions of the UCL despite finishing outside the top eight of the league phase on both occasions.
Big wins have increased since the league phase began. Across the 21 seasons of group stage between 2003-04 and 2023-24, 190 of 2,016 games ended with a team winning by a margin of 4+ goals — 9.4%. Since the introduction of the league phase, 14.5% of matches have seen a team win by 4+ goals. Average goal difference between teams in games has risen from 1.56 in the old group-stage format to 1.86 in the 36-team league phase, while average margin of victory increased from 2.02 to 2.17.
High-scoring games are also up. In UCL history just 15 matches have witnessed 9+ goals. Four of those have been in the league phase since its introduction, 26.7% of all 9+ goal games, despite league-phase matches since 2024-25 making up only 10.7% of all Champions League games.
Last season saw both the most average goals per game in round one and the knockout stage since 2003-04. This season’s league phase is on course to beat that record, and the knockout-stage average has increased in each of the last three seasons.
