MLS Reveals Details of Its 2027 Sprint Season Before Calendar Flip

Major League Soccer (MLS) has unveiled plans for a condensed “sprint season” in the first half of 2027, serving as a transitional campaign before the league fully adopts a summer-to-spring schedule. The announcement, made on March 19, 2025, outlines a high-stakes, fast-paced format that will reshape the competitive landscape for one season only.

Structure of the 2027 Sprint Season

The sprint season will see all MLS teams play a 14-game regular season, with each club facing all 14 of its conference rivals once—seven at home and seven away. This intra-conference format ensures regional rivalries will be front and center, fueling intense competition. The top eight teams from each conference will advance to a single-elimination playoff, culminating in MLS Cup, scheduled for May 2027.

Qualification and Implications

Despite its shortened format, the sprint season will carry significant weight. Five berths in the 2028 Concacaf Champions Cup will be awarded based on performance, while nine teams from each conference will qualify for the 2028 Leagues Cup. This ensures that clubs cannot afford to treat the campaign as a mere exhibition.

Following the sprint season, MLS will officially transition to its new calendar, kicking off the 2027-28 season in July 2027. The league will play from July through December, take a winter break, and resume in mid-to-late February, concluding regular-season play by the end of April. The postseason and MLS Cup will again be held in May.

Excitement and Concerns Among Executives

League executives have expressed both enthusiasm and caution regarding the sprint season. “I think it’s gonna be super fun,” said one anonymous sporting director, praising the tight schedule and compact footprint. “Fair play to (MLS executive vice president Nelson Rodriguez), the schedule footprint is great. It’s all intra-conference. It’s just like, bang, bang, bang.”

However, concerns remain. With only 14 games, strength of schedule imbalances could arise, particularly due to the single home-and-away rotation. Rivalry matches will be one-sided in terms of venue, potentially leaving half of each fan base disappointed. Additionally, some executives question how seriously teams will take the tournament, especially if clubs opt to reduce rosters in preparation for the calendar flip and potential new roster rules.

“The question will be, how seriously do we take it?” one sporting director noted. “Do teams just shed bodies to get ready for the calendar flip? Does that make sense for us?”

Historical Precedent and Competitive Integrity

While most general managers agree that every game will be critical, with little room for error, some are hesitant to equate a sprint-season MLS Cup to one earned over a full campaign. The 2020 Columbus Crew, champions of the pandemic-shortened season, serve as the closest comparison—a team that triumphed under extraordinary circumstances but whose achievement, while celebrated, was viewed through a different lens.

As MLS prepares for this historic shift, the 2027 sprint season promises to deliver nonstop action, regional fireworks, and a unique challenge for clubs balancing short-term glory with long-term planning.
