George Russell Triumphs in Dramatic Canada Sprint After Tense Battle with Kimi Antonelli
George Russell emerged victorious in a high-tension Canadian Grand Prix Sprint, holding off a charging Lando Norris and surviving a fierce, controversial encounter with his Mercedes teammate, Kimi Antonelli. The win marks a crucial return to the top step for the 28-year-old Briton, who has seen Antonelli dominate the last three rounds.
Intra-Team Tension at the Front
Starting from pole position, Russell maintained the lead as the 100km dash began at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. However, the race quickly became a battle of nerves as the current championship leader, 19-year-old Kimi Antonelli, applied relentless pressure. The tension peaked on Lap 6 when the two Silver Arrows drivers clashed while fighting for position.
Antonelli attempted an overtake around the outside of Turn 1, resulting in contact that pushed the Italian off the track and onto the grass. A frustrated Antonelli took to the team radio, labeling Russell's defense as "very naughty" and calling for a penalty. The loss of composure proved costly, as Antonelli went off track again, allowing McLaren's Lando Norris to slip into second place.
Pressure from McLaren and the 'Wall of Champions'
Despite the drama with his teammate, Russell was far from safe. Lando Norris, eyeing a repeat of his Miami Sprint win, stayed within tenths of a second of the lead for much of the race. Russell’s defense was further complicated by traffic, including a blue-flag situation involving Williams' Alex Albon.
Further down the field, Lewis Hamilton's race was a rollercoaster. After displacing Oscar Piastri for P4 early on, Hamilton famously hit the 'Wall of Champions' while defending his position. This error allowed Piastri to reclaim fourth place, while Hamilton eventually slipped further back to finish sixth, behind his Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc.
Post-Race Reactions
Reflecting on the battle with Antonelli, Russell expressed relief that the incident didn't result in a double-DNF. "It was a good, hard battle... I'm glad that we're both sat here now. It could have been something different, but it wasn't and that's how racing should be," Russell stated. He also brushed off concerns regarding his recent form, saying, "I was never really concerned, to be honest... I just wanted to get back racing."
Antonelli, though calmer in the press conference, admitted his emotions had run high. "Emotions were very high in the moment, and obviously I was very annoyed, but I just need to recheck, and for sure we're going to talk about it," the rookie conceded. The frustration was shared by Team Principal Toto Wolff, who told Antonelli over the radio: "Concentrate on the driving please, and not on the radio moaning."
