Mumbai Indians and Mahela Jayawardene agree to part ways as new coach search begins
Mumbai Indians prepare for a change in the dugout
Mumbai Indians and head coach Mahela Jayawardene have mutually agreed to bring in a “fresh perspective” ahead of the next Indian Premier League season, according to a report by The Times of India.
The decision was reached during a meeting of the franchise’s senior officials earlier this week. Mumbai have identified several candidates for the head coach position, and interviews could be held in the coming week as the franchise moves towards a decision.
A source familiar with the discussions told the publication: “Mahela is always part of the one family. It was mutually decided to bring in fresh perspective from the upcoming season and a new coach is likely to be finalised in the coming week. There are names on the table and a decision will be taken soon.”
Jayawardene unlikely to stay in another role
Jayawardene returned to the Mumbai Indians coaching set-up in 2024 on a “two plus one” contract. The report says he is unlikely to remain with the franchise in a different capacity as Mumbai opt for a new direction ahead of their next cycle.
His tenure included a playoff appearance in 2025, followed by a ninth-place finish in 2026. Mumbai’s latest campaign was described as disappointing, with the team winning four matches amid injuries, availability problems and reported unrest in the dressing room.
Hardik Pandya situation remains open
The report adds that discussions involving a possible Hardik Pandya trade could develop in the coming weeks. Franchise sources say the situation remains unchanged for now, though further activity has not been ruled out as the retention deadline approaches.
