Isha Ambani’s slow-internet complaint sparked Reliance Jio’s origin story
Reliance Jio’s beginnings, Mukesh Ambani has said, can be traced to an ordinary household frustration: an unreliable internet connection that threatened to interrupt his daughter Isha’s college coursework.
Speaking in London in March 2018 after receiving the FT-ArcelorMittal Boldness in Business award, the Reliance Industries chairman recalled that Isha, then studying at Yale, was home and trying to submit an assignment when the connection let her down. The episode prompted the family to consider a much larger question: if connectivity was a problem in a well-resourced household, what did it mean for people across India?

A network designed around data
The discussion turned to India’s digital future and the challenge of making fast, affordable internet more widely available. According to Ambani’s account, his son Akash observed that telecommunications was moving beyond voice calls towards data and internet-led services. Reliance’s response was to build a 4G-only network around data rather than simply upgrade a legacy voice-focused system.
Reliance began developing the business in 2011, when mobile internet access in India was limited by network quality, data prices and relatively low smartphone adoption. Jio launched in September 2016. Its introductory free voice and low-cost data offers helped drive usage and intensified pressure on competitors, contributing to consolidation in the telecom sector.
From connectivity to a wider digital business
Jio has since grown beyond mobile connectivity into digital services, entertainment, commerce and financial offerings. Akash Ambani, who was closely involved in its early development, became chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd in June 2022.
At a Jio Platforms IPO press conference, Akash Ambani said the company served 533.3 million customers. The scale of the business stands in sharp contrast to the small domestic incident that Mukesh Ambani has described as the spark for its creation.
