PCB Reprimands Shadab Khan for Sharp Comments on Former Pakistan Legends During World Cup
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has expressed strong displeasure with star all-rounder Shadab Khan following his recent comments targeting former players during the ongoing World Cup. The board's intervention comes after Shadab's pointed response to criticism regarding his inclusion in the team, which reportedly crossed acceptable boundaries.
Shadab's remarks were made in the aftermath of Pakistan's dominant 102-run victory over Namibia in Colombo on Wednesday. The 25-year-old contributed significantly with a quickfire 36 off 22 balls and impressive bowling figures of 3-13, helping secure a crucial win. However, during the post-match press conference, he hit back at detractors, particularly former cricketers on television panels.
"Former cricketers have their own opinions. They (former players) were legends, but even they could not achieve what we have. We have beaten India in a World Cup," Shadab stated, drawing widespread attention.
According to reports from Telecom Asia Sport, team manager Naveed Cheema was instructed by the PCB to convey their concerns directly to Shadab. Cheema informed the player that his comments had gone "out of his limits." The message was clear: all former players, including Shadab's father-in-law Saqlain Mushtaq, are to be respected as greats of Pakistan cricket.
The PCB has also directed Cheema to remind the entire squad to keep public statements focused solely on match-related matters. Any further breaches could lead to disciplinary action.
Saqlain Mushtaq, a former Pakistan off-spinner and Shadab's relative, expressed his disappointment over the incident. "Those were unwanted comments, and most of the players had played with me. In fact, I am also one of those who have not won an ICC event, but we won several big matches for Pakistan - Tests and ODIs," Saqlain told Telecom Asia Sport.
Pakistan's campaign continues in the Super Eight stage, with their next match against New Zealand scheduled for Saturday in Colombo. They will then face England in Pallekele on February 24, followed by a game against Sri Lanka four days later at the same venue.
This episode highlights the ongoing tensions between current players and former legends in Pakistan cricket, underscoring the PCB's commitment to maintaining decorum and respect within the cricketing fraternity.
