Formula 2 leader Nikola Tsolov stakes claim for 2027 Formula 1 promotion
Formula 2 championship leader Nikola Tsolov is staking a commanding claim for a seat on the Formula 1 grid in 2027 following a dominant campaign with the Red Bull Junior Team and Campos Racing.
The 19-year-old Bulgarian driver, nicknamed "The Bulgarian Lion", leads the F2 standings by 20 points after claiming six victories this season. His standout performance came with a weekend sweep at Silverstone, where he won both the Sprint and Feature races while establishing a championship record of three consecutive race wins.
Rapid Rise Through Red Bull Junior Program
After joining the Red Bull Junior Team ahead of the 2025 season, Tsolov experienced a significant breakthrough in performance, narrowly missing out on the F3 title before stepping up to F2 for the final two rounds of 2025 alongside Arvid Lindblad.
"They've got such a great history of bringing young drivers through these categories. It's been key for me to move to the Red Bull Junior Team," Tsolov said. "They have been supporting me in every sense, helping me develop outside of the track, on track, all the ways you handle different situations, which has been super important."
Praise from Campos Racing and Eyeing 2027
Campos Racing team principal Adrian Campos has publicly endorsed Tsolov, asserting that the young driver is ready to make the step into Formula 1 next season. Despite the growing hype, Tsolov remains focused on securing the F2 crown.
"The noise can really get you into trouble. But honestly, I've been handling it pretty well," Tsolov explained. "I believe in myself as well and I really do feel like this year has been great and I should deserve a chance. But things are never certain in this sport, so it's all about taking every opportunity I get from now on and focus on F2."
With Red Bull continuing to monitor his development closely, Tsolov's record-setting performances keep him at the forefront of candidates for an F1 promotion as seats are finalized for 2027.
