Turkish giants Besiktas have issued an extraordinary and furious statement following their 1-0 Super Lig defeat to Alanyaspor, labeling the match officials' performance as "a document of shame for Turkish refereeing."

The Istanbul side suffered a shock away loss courtesy of a 73rd-minute strike from Nuno Lima, despite thoroughly dominating the encounter with 15 shots to Alanyaspor's five and controlling the vast majority of possession. However, the post-match fallout focused entirely on referee Adnan Deniz Kayatepe and video assistant referee (VAR) Bulent Birincioglu.

Montage of Controversies

Following the match, Besiktas published a video montage highlighting four controversial decisions that went against them, accompanied by the caption: "Positions are different, seasons are different, names are different, decisions are always the same!"

Among the key grievances cited by the club was an unpunished incident where summer signing Leandro Trossard was allegedly slapped by an opponent, as well as a disallowed goal scored by South Korean forward Oh Hyeon-gyu and unpenalized challenges inside the area on striker Dusan Vlahovic.

"The management displayed by the referees in our match against Corendon Alanyaspor has taken its place in history as a document of shame for Turkish refereeing," Besiktas stated via social media platform X.

"Adnan Deniz Kayatepe, the prince of the Central Referee Committee president whose scandalous decisions in last year’s Ziraat Turkish Cup semi-final still linger fresh in memories, has added yet another disgraceful performance to his record, as if to say, 'Where did we leave off?'"

"The opposing player slapped Trossard right in front of the world’s eyes. Referee Adnan Deniz Kayatepe failed to see the incident. Bülent Birincioğlu in the VAR room, meanwhile, remained silent. Oh broke free from his opponent in a tussle and scored a goal. Because the opposing player dramatically threw himself to the ground, Adnan Deniz Kayatepe disallowed our goal. Vlahovic was grabbed by the collar and brought down while trying to enter the penalty area. Referee Kayatepe once again turned a blind eye to what happened."

Demand for Change

Besiktas demanded that neither official be assigned to their fixtures moving forward, writing: "We do not want to see malicious referees like Adnan Deniz Kayatepe and Bülent Birincioğlu in our matches ever again. We seek neither advantages nor privileges. We only demand fair and equal officiating. We will continue our rightful struggle with determination until this unjust system changes."

The controversy arrives at a sensitive moment for Turkish football. Earlier this month, former Premier League referee Anthony Taylor was appointed director of elite refereeing for the Turkish Football Federation, coming ten months after a five-year investigation revealed that 371 out of 571 match officials in Turkey held betting accounts.
