Rabiot gives Amorim a winning Serie A start

Adrien Rabiot came off the bench to score and assist in a decisive two-minute spell as AC Milan began the 2026-27 Serie A season with a 2-1 victory away to Torino.

Ruben Amorim’s first competitive match as Milan coach was goalless at half-time despite early chances for Alphadjo Cisse, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Pervis Estupinan. Samuel Chukwueze forced the first save of the match from Diego Mascardi, but neither side created enough to break the deadlock before the interval.

Two goals in two minutes

Amorim introduced Luka Modric and Rabiot shortly before the hour mark, and the substitutions quickly changed the match. In the 64th minute, Rabiot supplied the cross for Cisse, who curled the ball beyond Mascardi to put Milan ahead.

Rabiot then doubled the lead just two minutes later. After Chukwueze delivered an inviting cross from the right, the French midfielder met it on the volley and drove the finish into the roof of the net.

Torino responded strongly. Alieu Njie struck the left post and Pietro Comuzzo sent an effort over the crossbar before Che Adams pulled one back in stoppage time, brilliantly hooking Gvidas Gineitis’ free-kick beyond Mike Maignan. Milan held on for all three points.

Amorim makes history as Milan coach

The result gave Amorim a winning start to his Serie A project and made him the first foreign coach to win his opening league match in charge of Milan since Leonardo in August 2009. That victory also came away from home, against Siena.

Rabiot’s impact was particularly significant after questions over his future following Massimiliano Allegri’s departure. He had finished the previous campaign with six goals and four assists, and his instant influence suggested he remains an important player for the new coach.

Chukwueze also impressed after returning from a loan spell at Fulham. He led Milan for touches in the opposition box, chances created and possession won, while the visitors finished with 19 shots and an expected-goals total of 1.61 compared with Torino’s eight shots and 1.01 xG.
