George Russell Delivers ‘Perfect Lap’ to Take Baku Pole by 0.837 Seconds

George Russell produced a stunning final lap to take pole position for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, beating Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc by 0.837 seconds in a dramatic qualifying session at the Baku City Circuit.

Russell rises above chaotic qualifying

The Mercedes driver topped every qualifying segment and improved with each run before setting an unbeatable time of 1m 42.526s. The result gave Russell his fifth pole start of the season and his first since a spell in which his team-mate Kimi Antonelli exited qualifying early after a damaging error in Q1.

Despite Russell’s dominance on the timesheets, the session featured intense competition from Ferrari, Red Bull and McLaren. Several drivers locked up and ran into the escape areas, triggering yellow flags that disrupted rivals’ final attempts.

‘The perfect lap’

Russell said the performance felt especially satisfying after a period away from pole position.

“It’s been a while, so it definitely feels good,” Russell said. “It’s probably the biggest margin of my whole career, even including F2, F3 days, so the lap felt really sweet.”

He credited the Mercedes’ performance throughout the weekend and the precision required to extract the maximum from Baku’s demanding street circuit.

“The car’s been feeling great this weekend, and on a track like this, when you can hook it up like that, it feels really amazing,” he added.

Russell also suggested that Max Verstappen could have been a serious challenger had the Red Bull driver completed a final clean run. A yellow flag caused by Lando Norris prevented Verstappen from having another opportunity, while Russell benefited from a useful slipstream behind Isack Hadjar on the long back straight.

“It was just the perfect lap at the end,” Russell said. “I was in a good gap behind Isack Hadjar, which gave me a nice little slipstream, probably by another tenth or two down this back straight.”

Confidence tempered by Baku’s unpredictability

Russell believes Mercedes is in a position to fight for victory, but he knows pole position offers no guarantee at a circuit renowned for incidents and late twists.

“I’m feeling good. I think we’re in a great place to go for the win. But of course, this is Baku and anything can happen,” he said.

Leclerc will start alongside Russell and is expected to apply immediate pressure into Turn 1. Russell acknowledged the Ferrari driver’s likely attack but remained confident in Mercedes’ race prospects.

“Of course, Charles is going to be motivated to probably throw one down the inside at Turn 1, but whatever happens, I feel confident that we can go for the win,” Russell said.
