Child Survives After Being Buried in Sand Heap, Police Say

JABALPUR: A 28-year-old history-sheeter in Madhya Pradesh has been arrested for allegedly abducting and raping a two-year-old girl who was asleep with her parents at a construction site where they worked as labourers, police said.

The accused allegedly buried the child in a heap of sand when she started crying, before fleeing the spot. The girl was later found by her family and rushed to hospital, where she is currently undergoing treatment.

Crime Occurred on Night of October 9-10

Vijay Nagar police station in-charge Dheeraj Raj said the crime took place on the intervening night of October 9 and 10. During the investigation, police found that Ashish Patel, who worked at the same construction site, was missing.

A search operation led the police to Jabera in Damoh district, where he was taken into custody.

Accused Confessed, Say Police

According to police, the accused admitted during questioning that he pressed the child's head into the sand to silence her when she began crying before fleeing the scene.

The case has triggered outrage over the safety of children living at makeshift labour sites, where families often sleep in the open near their work areas.
