Delhi Capitals Confirm Chaminda Vaas as Fast Bowling Coach for IPL 2027

Delhi Capitals have confirmed the appointment of former Sri Lanka all-rounder Chaminda Vaas as their fast bowling coach ahead of the 2027 Indian Premier League season, handing one of the game's most decorated left-arm pacers his maiden coaching stint in the tournament.

Chaminda Vaas appointed Delhi Capitals fast bowling coach

Vaas, who claimed 355 wickets in Tests and 400 in One-Day Internationals during an illustrious international career, joins a redesigned Capitals backroom staff headed by former India captain Sourav Ganguly. The franchise had already moved to bring in former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh as assistant and batting coach earlier this week, continuing a significant reshuffle as Delhi build towards the new season.

A change in the bowling department

The 52-year-old Vaas replaces former India pacer Munaf Patel, who had served as Delhi's bowling coach over the previous two seasons. The switch signals the franchise's intent to lean on Vaas' wealth of experience as both a player and a coach.

Extensive international coaching pedigree

Vaas arrives with considerable coaching credentials at international level. He has worked with Sri Lanka's men's team across three separate stints and also held a brief coaching contract with New Zealand. He was appointed Sri Lanka's bowling coach from 2013 to 2015 before taking up the same role with Ireland for the 2016 T20 World Cup, after which he returned to the Sri Lankan set-up.

Familiarity with the IPL

The former left-arm pacer is no stranger to the IPL, having represented Deccan Chargers between 2008 and 2010, where he picked up 18 wickets in 13 matches for the franchise.

Part of a wider rebuild

Vaas' appointment is the latest step in Delhi Capitals' preparations for the 2027 season, as the franchise continues to reshape its backroom staff under Ganguly's leadership. The move follows Ganguly's earlier confirmation as head coach and the additions of Yuvraj Singh to the coaching group, underlining a broader effort to reset the team's support structure.
