Carrick confirms Rashford is 'sharp and ready to play' for Manchester United after Barcelona loan

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has confirmed Marcus Rashford is "sharp, strong, and ready to play" ahead of the club's Premier League opener against Hull City at the MKM Stadium.

The 28-year-old forward has rejoined the Red Devils following an impressive loan spell at Barcelona during the 2025-26 campaign, where he helped Hansi Flick's side retain the LaLiga title. Rashford made 49 appearances across all competitions for the Catalan giants, starting 26 matches and registering 25 goal involvements (14 goals and 11 assists)—the fourth-highest tally in Barcelona's squad.

Although Barcelona held a reported €30m (£26m) option to buy, the June 15 deadline to make the switch permanent lapsed without a deal, paving the way for Rashford to return to Old Trafford. His last competitive appearance for United came 20 months ago in a Europa League win over Viktoria Plzen, followed by productive loan spells at Aston Villa and Barcelona.

Carrick Praises Rashford's Return and Versatility

Speaking ahead of the season opener, Carrick expressed his delight at Rashford's condition and integration back into the squad.

"Marcus has come back fantastically well. He's enjoying his football, he looks sharp, strong and ready to play," Carrick said. "I've been delighted with him since he came back. He can play through the middle and has done."

"I wouldn't say it's his number one position, but he can do that, and we've got forwards that can give us flexibility right across that front line. We've used all of them in slightly different roles, so I think for us to have that option is really good through the season."

Squad Depth and Transfer Activity

Rashford, who has two years remaining on his contract, has amassed 138 goals and 60 assists in 426 appearances for United since breaking into the first team in 2015. He bolsters an attacking department that already features Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Amad Diallo.

United have also been proactive in the transfer market, adding Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa and Andrey Santos from Chelsea to strengthen their midfield. The club has also lodged an initial £60m bid plus £5m in add-ons for Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba.

Addressing potential business ahead of the September 1 deadline, Carrick added: "We're just looking to strengthen the squad. We're certainly working towards that. We're trying to make the most of the opportunities to finish the window stronger than we went into it, and we're in a good way to doing that."
