Arteta '100%' Certain Lewis-Skelly Will Stay at Arsenal Amid Premier League Interest

Arteta Quashes Transfer Talk Surrounding Teenage Sensation

Mikel Arteta has moved to end any uncertainty surrounding Myles Lewis-Skelly's future at Arsenal, declaring himself "100%" confident the 19-year-old will remain at the Emirates this summer.

Lewis-Skelly's Arsenal future had been cast into doubt after reported interest from Premier League rivals Manchester United and Chelsea during the current transfer window, with earlier reports suggesting Arsenal were open to selling the highly-rated midfielder.

However, Arteta was unequivocal when asked how confident he was that Lewis-Skelly would stay at the club ahead of Arsenal's Premier League opener against Coventry City.

"100%," the Arsenal boss responded.

Teenager Making His Mark on the Big Stage

Lewis-Skelly has been a prominent figure throughout Arsenal's pre-season preparations, starting in all four of the club's friendlies before playing a pivotal role in their Community Shield victory over Manchester City on Sunday.

The teenager provided the assist for Riccardo Calafiori's opener, which came after just 23 seconds — making Lewis-Skelly the youngest player to either score or assist in the Community Shield since Bukayo Saka's assist for Arsenal against Liverpool in 2020, when Saka was 18 years and 359 days old.

His emergence has been nothing short of remarkable. Last season, Lewis-Skelly also started in the Champions League final for Arsenal, becoming the second-youngest Englishman ever to start a Champions League showpiece — a record bettered only by Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold in 2018.

Arteta on the Brink of Milestone

Beyond the Lewis-Skelly situation, Arteta is also approaching a personal milestone. The Spaniard has won 149 of his 248 Premier League games in charge of Arsenal, and a victory against Coventry City in the season opener would see him become just the fifth manager to reach 150 Premier League victories in fewer than 250 games in the competition.

That elite group includes Pep Guardiola (204 games), Jose Mourinho (231), Jurgen Klopp (237), and Sir Alex Ferguson (247) — placing Arteta in illustrious company.

Defensive Reinforcements on the Horizon

Arsenal could also receive a timely boost for their Premier League curtain-raiser, with Ezri Konsa reportedly close to joining from Aston Villa to bolster the Gunners' backline.

When asked whether a defensive signing could feature against Coventry, Arteta remained characteristically coy but optimistic.

"I'm always positive and confident. I cannot control [it]. It doesn't depend on us. We are trying our best to achieve that," he said.

"We have a specific issue in the backline especially with the long-term issue of Willy [William Saliba]. We miss one more defender so we are trying to reinforce that area. When we're ready to announce something, we'll let you know."

With Saliba's long-term absence leaving a void in defence and Lewis-Skelly's future now seemingly secured, Arsenal appear to be shaping a squad capable of mounting another serious challenge at the summit of English football.
