Manchester United contact Barcelona over Alejandro Balde as left-back hunt steps up
Manchester United have made direct contact with Barcelona over a potential deal for left-back Alejandro Balde, according to transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano.
The Red Devils are actively scouring the market for a new left-back ahead of the new Premier League season and have added the Barcelona defender to their shortlist, alongside Newcastle United's Lewis Hall.
Romano reports that United have held calls with Balde's camp over the past few days to establish whether an exit from the Spotify Camp Nou is possible and under what conditions.

Why Balde's future in Catalunya is up in the air
The 21-year-old Spain international's situation has been thrown into doubt this summer after an injury-plagued 2025/26 campaign. Balde lost his place in the starting XI during the second half of last season after João Cancelo arrived on loan, and the Portugal star has now completed a permanent transfer to the Camp Nou, signing a three-year contract this week.
With Blaugrana boss Hansi Flick having favoured Cancelo over Balde down the stretch, there are suggestions the La Masia graduate could be facing up to a year as second-choice left-back. Reports earlier in the transfer window indicated that Barcelona, for the right price, would be willing to listen to offers for the defender.
Balde 'happy' in Barcelona — but United interest persists
Despite the interest from Old Trafford, Balde is said to remain happy in Catalunya and is not actively thinking about a move. Any deal would therefore require persuading both the player and Barcelona that a switch is the right step.
United are also reported to be considering a move for Newcastle United's Lewis Hall as they weigh up their options on the left side of defence, with Balde emerging as a genuine alternative as the summer transfer window heads towards its final weeks.
