Enzo Maresca brushes off Community Shield loss as Manchester City prepare for Bournemouth opener
Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca insists that his side’s heavy 3-0 defeat to Arsenal in the Community Shield served as an invaluable learning experience as he prepares for his first Premier League match in charge against Bournemouth on Sunday.
City suffered a comprehensive loss to the Gunners at Wembley, with Riccardo Calafiori, Kai Havertz, and Martin Odegaard finding the back of the net. However, Maresca pointed out that differing fitness levels played a significant role in the outcome.

Learning Curve Ahead of Opening Weekend
Speaking to Sky Sports, Maresca highlighted the disparity in pre-season preparation between the two sides during the Community Shield clash.
“We started with four players who didn’t play a single minute in pre-season, while all 11 Arsenal players played minutes before,” Maresca explained. “The physical condition was completely different. I think it was completely different between us and them.
“But overall, I think it was good in terms of learning. For me, it has been important because I need to know the players. I need to know how they work in some situations. And it was important to see the reaction from the players, after the first goal and after the game. We are getting to know each other.”
Bournemouth Test Under Marco Rose
City welcome Bournemouth to the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, where new Cherries boss Marco Rose will take charge of his first English top-flight match. Bournemouth ended last season on an 18-game unbeaten run under previous manager Andoni Iraola, including a 1-1 draw against City in May.
“It’s exciting, for sure,” said Rose. “They are a top club with a top coach and a top squad. I watched three of their pre-season friendlies and didn’t expect the result from the Arsenal game. They are a top team with a top coach, but I’m not here to praise Manchester City, I’m here to compete with them at the weekend.”
Bournemouth will be without injured forward Junior Kroupi, with Brazilian teenager Rayan potentially leading the line. Meanwhile, City will look to striker Erling Haaland, who boasts a prolific record in the opening month of the season, scoring 22 goals in 14 August Premier League appearances at an average of one goal every 54 minutes.
