Bruno Genesio demands proactive Marseille start against Strasbourg
Genesio sets clear demands for Marseille opener
Bruno Genesio has called on Marseille to adopt a proactive identity when they host Strasbourg in the opening match of the 2026-27 Ligue 1 season on Friday.

Genesio, appointed head coach earlier this summer after leaving Lille, has outlined an ambitious blueprint for his new team. The 59-year-old has managed 299 Ligue 1 matches with Rennes, Lyon and Lille, recording 160 victories, 60 draws and 79 defeats.
“I demand a proactive approach, with a high-pressing block, attacking principles, and a clear team and playing identity,” Genesio said.
The coach believes Marseille made encouraging progress during pre-season, although he warned that preparation results and performances must now be translated into competitive action.
“I felt real progress during pre-season. I can tell the players have bought in, understood, and improved,” he said. “There are still things to work on, that's natural. I'm overall satisfied but we need to prove it in the league.”
Gouiri tasked with leading the attack
Marseille will begin the campaign after losing Mason Greenwood and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang during the summer. That places greater responsibility on Amine Gouiri, who contributed 16 goals directly last season, scoring 11 and providing five assists in 28 appearances.
Strasbourg will also begin a new era. Hugo Oliveira is set to make his debut as head coach after Gary O'Neil's departure for Ipswich Town. Oliveira's former Famalicao side kept 17 clean sheets in the 2025-26 Primeira Liga, the second-highest total in the division.
Marseille hold strong home record
Marseille have won five of their last six Ligue 1 opening matches, although their most recent opener ended in a 1-0 defeat away to Rennes. They have also avoided defeat in their last 18 home league meetings with Strasbourg, winning 10 and drawing eight since a 1-0 loss in March 1997.
Strasbourg arrive with confidence away from home, having gone unbeaten in their last six Ligue 1 away matches. They collected 16 away points in 2026, fewer only than Lille and Paris Saint-Germain among current Ligue 1 clubs.
Midfielder Diogo Sousa could make his Ligue 1 debut for Strasbourg. He posted a 75 per cent dribble-success rate in the 2025-26 Primeira Liga among players attempting more than 25 dribbles.
Marseille are the favourites, with an Opta win probability of 53 per cent, compared with 23.2 per cent for a draw and 23.8 per cent for a Strasbourg victory.
