Saka sparks Arsenal surge to sweep Lille aside 3-0

Arsenal turned a stubborn Champions League contest into a comfortable 3-0 win over Lille, scoring three times in seven second-half minutes at the Emirates Stadium. Bukayo Saka came on from the bench to set up Eberechi Eze and then score himself, after Jurriën Timber had broken the deadlock.

Lille frustrated Arsenal for much of the first hour, while the hosts struggled to make their possession count. Arsenal had opportunities through Bruno Guimarães and Mikel Merino, but neither could convert. Lille briefly thought they had taken the lead when Ayase Ueda scored, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.

The breakthrough arrived in the 64th minute. Noni Madueke found Timber, whose first touch set up a composed finish lifted over goalkeeper Berke Özer. Saka, Martin Ødegaard and Kai Havertz were preparing to enter when Arsenal struck.

Saka changes the game

Saka made an immediate impact. He supplied the pass for Eze to make it 2-0, then finished a flowing move involving Ødegaard and Havertz to complete the scoring in the 71st minute. Arsenal’s substitutes helped turn a tense match into a decisive victory, while Lille finished without a shot on target, according to Sky Sports.

Lille manager Davide Ancelotti said his side found it difficult to cope once Arsenal raised the tempo. “With the players they always have on the bench, they can change the rhythm of the game,” he said. “For us it was difficult to keep up with the rhythm they put after 60 minutes.”

The match also featured a warm reception for former Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud when he came on for Lille. Arsenal’s win extended their strong Champions League run at the Emirates and maintained their winning start in this season’s competition.
