Atletico Madrid punish United’s slow start as Yoro sees red in 2-0 defeat
United are behind inside a minute
Manchester United’s Champions League trip to Atletico Madrid began with a defensive lapse and ended in defeat, a controversial red card and a fifth consecutive match without a win. Pablo Barrios put the hosts ahead inside the opening minute, finishing after a simple ball over the top opened United up.
United had chances to respond. Bryan Mbeumo threatened from the right, while Bruno Fernandes later lifted an opportunity narrowly wide after being played through by Youri Tielemans. Fernandes also struck the crossbar as United tried to force an equaliser.

Yoro dismissal changes the finish
Atletico had a second goal disallowed before the break after a video review found Marcos Llorente had handled in the build-up to Johnny Cardoso’s finish. The home side continued to create openings after half-time, with Julián Alvarez hitting the post.
With United still trailing 1-0, Leny Yoro was sent off after referee Glenn Nyberg reviewed his challenge on Jonathan David and judged that the defender had denied a goalscoring opportunity. The decision drew criticism from Sky Sports pundit Clinton Morrison, who called it “soft” and said: “No way, that should not be a red.”
Atletico made the extra man count soon afterwards. David’s effort was saved by Senne Lammens, but Ademola Lookman followed up to score in the 79th minute and settle the match.
The result leaves United on three points in the Champions League, according to the match report, and adds to the scrutiny on head coach Michael Carrick before the team’s next league fixture. Atletico were more composed and dangerous for long spells, while United’s costly opening and inability to take their chances proved decisive.
