New Zealand appoint BJ Watling as batting coach as O'Rourke and Sears step up recoveries

New Zealand nurse pace attack back to full strength

Head coach Rob Walter has confirmed New Zealand are carefully managing their fast bowlers ahead of a busy schedule, with Will O'Rourke and Ben Sears following measured return pathways and Lockie Ferguson's game time restricted during the ODI series against India. Off the field, former wicketkeeper-batter BJ Watling has joined the set-up as batting coach.

O'Rourke is gradually returning after a lower-back injury, and while Walter said the injury itself has settled, the team will not rush the quick back into full contention.

"The injury is sort of recovered and we're pretty happy with that, but there's obviously just a real safe loading pattern for him to get into to be ready for Test match cricket," Walter said.

The team hopes O'Rourke will be available for the Test series against Australia. Sears, meanwhile, is recovering from ankle surgery and is expected to start running soon before gradually returning to bowling.

Ferguson limited to final two ODIs

Veteran quick Lockie Ferguson will feature only in the final two ODIs against India as part of the workload-management plan. He was recalled on October 11 alongside Finn Allen and Tim Seifert for the closing matches of the series, as the Black Caps balance immediate selection with longer-term fitness.

"He is desperate to play and he's made no bones about that, which is awesome. I love that. But it's also just taking the right steps to the process because a number of other guys have been playing in the meantime and doing well," Walter said.

Experience against India A and a familiar face in the coaching group

Walter also highlighted the value of New Zealand A players facing India A, arguing that exposure to strong opposition is a valuable way for the country's youngsters to gain experience.

New Zealand have also appointed former wicketkeeper-batter BJ Watling as batting coach, a move Walter believes will strengthen the team. "He has a massive amount of respect already in the change room before having said a word," Walter said. "I'm exceptionally excited by what he can bring to the group."
