Jimmy Adams leaves Hampshire after 25 years for Tasmania role
Hampshire club legend Jimmy Adams will leave the county after more than 25 years as a player and coach, the club has confirmed.
The 46-year-old has agreed a new role in Australia with Tasmania after coaching for eight years at the Utilita Bowl. Adams retired from playing cricket in 2018 having made 462 appearances for Hampshire across all formats, scoring 19,723 runs.
'I've been lucky enough to fulfil a dream'
Adams, born in Winchester, came through the ranks at Hampshire and made his debut in 2001. He captained the county between 2012 and 2015 and lifted five trophies during his time as a player.
In 2022 he was named lead batting coach with the Hawks, winning the men's Vitality Blast that same year.
Speaking to the club website, Adams reflected on his long association with Hampshire.
"I've been lucky enough to fulfil a dream and I'll be following Hampshire for the rest of my life," he said.
"I'm going to an exciting, new challenge, but I don't see it as an end, and I'll be following Hampshire and wishing the guys well.
"It's been a tough decision to leave, but I think the timing's right, and it gives me a chance to test myself elsewhere.
"I want to give a big thank you to everyone for their support over the years, especially Giles (White, director of cricket) and the coaches and players I've had the privilege of working with. I'll be coming back to support the team and see everyone in the not too distant future."
End of an era at the Utilita Bowl
Adams' departure closes a chapter spanning more than a quarter of a century at the club, first as an opening batter and then as a coach. He leaves for Tasmania, where he will take up a new role in Australian cricket.
His exit comes during a period of change at Hampshire, following the club's relegation from County Championship Division One — confirmed by a five-wicket defeat against Leicestershire on 21 September 2026 — and head coach Russell Domingo's call for a "reset" across every department, with recruitment, facilities and red-ball performances all under review.
