Kuldeep Yadav Masterclass Sparks India Comeback Against West Indies in Trivandrum

India’s decision to bowl first in the baking heat of Trivandrum initially appeared to backfire as West Indies' openers Justin Greaves and John Campbell seized control in the Powerplay. The duo punished India's pace attack, hitting 13 boundaries in the first ten overs to construct the West Indies' first 100-plus opening stand in India in 24 years.

Kuldeep Yadav picked four wickets in Trivandrum ODI against West Indies

With the frontline seamers struggling to break through and finger-spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Naman Dhir failing to find assistance on a flat surface, captain Shubman Gill turned to Kuldeep Yadav in the 16th over. Assuming the mantle of the primary wicket-taker in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, the left-arm wrist-spinner completely altered the complexion of the contest.

Mastering Pace and Length

After being struck for an early six by Campbell, Kuldeep swiftly recalibrated his trajectory and lengths. Depriving the batters of room to execute the sweep, he induced an edge from Campbell with a sharply spinning wrong 'un to secure India's elusive opening breakthrough.

Kuldeep followed up by strangling West Indies captain Shai Hope with tight lines before deceiving him in flight to claim his second wicket. In a decisive double-wicket maiden over, he removed Greaves with another googly before bamboozling debutant Jewel Andrew with a delivery that kicked off the pitch to find the outside edge.

Restoring Confidence

Kuldeep's spell of 4 for 40 proved pivotal in suffocating the Caribbean side's scoring rate, with West Indies managing only 40 runs between the 20th and 30th overs. It marked a crucial return to form for the wrist-spinner, who has faced limited playing time across formats in recent months.

Speaking after the match, Kuldeep reflected on finding his groove:

“It always feels nice when you enjoy your bowling, that's where you achieve your best. You are a bit relaxed as well, then your performance comes at peak. To get that confidence back, you have to have a bowling spell like this.”

He added regarding his tactical execution:

“I was very calm in my rhythm and just trying to bowl whatever I felt like bowling, just varying the pace, variations were superb, just reading the batters, where they're going to hit me, and yeah, I found very good rhythm.”

West Indies batter Amir Jangoo acknowledged the impact of Kuldeep's spell, noting that the visitors failed to counteract his rhythm after a strong start: “One thing all of us have to do is put him under pressure as well. We cannot allow him to get into his spell, given the kind of start we had.”

With major assignments and potential spin-friendly conditions ahead, Kuldeep emphasized his focus on consistency and maintaining his rhythm moving forward.
