Naseem Shah's Troubled Path: Injury and Record Fine

Pakistan's rising cricket star Naseem Shah is once again in the spotlight, but for all the wrong reasons. The young pacer has been ruled out of the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) after suffering a side strain during Rawalpindi's match against Karachi Kings on Thursday. This injury not only sidelined him for the team's last game but has also intensified scrutiny over his persistent fitness issues, leaving the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) deeply dissatisfied.

Compounding his woes is a staggering fine of PKR 20 million (approximately USD 72,000), believed to be the largest penalty in Pakistan cricket history. The sanction came after Naseem criticized Punjab's Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz in a tweet, narrowly escaping a ban. Sources indicate that the PCB is unhappy with both his off-field behavior and fitness lapses, and he is likely to face further action.

Ongoing Fitness Concerns and Career Impact

Naseem's fitness troubles are not new. He missed the 2023 ODI World Cup due to similar issues and was also sidelined during Pakistan's disappointing 2026 T20 World Cup campaign, followed by exclusion from the tour of Bangladesh. Last year, he was demoted to the 'C' category in the PCB's central contracts list.

"Naseem’s rise has been stunted by off-field behaviour, his excessive attention to advertisements and podcasts, which has derailed his career," sources told Telecom Asia Sport. His frequent injuries have raised serious questions, with the selection committee expressing frustration.

In the coming days, Naseem will appear before the medical panel led by Dr. Javed Mughal for an extensive rehabilitation program under supervision. The PCB's medical panel aims to address these recurring problems to safeguard his promising career.
