Addo Sacked by Ghana 78 Days Before World Cup Opener

Ghana has dismissed head coach Otto Addo just 78 days before their opening match of the FIFA World Cup, following a string of poor results in international friendlies. The Ghana Football Association (GFA) announced the decision on their official website, stating that they “have parted ways with the head coach of the senior men's national team (Black Stars), Otto Addo, effective immediately.”

A Troubling Run of Form

The dismissal comes on the heels of a 2-1 loss to Germany in Stuttgart, where Deniz Undav scored a late winner after Abdul Fatawu had equalized following Kai Havertz’s opening goal for Germany. That defeat followed an even more concerning 5-1 thrashing at the hands of Austria just three days earlier. The losses extend Ghana’s losing streak to four consecutive matches in friendly fixtures, raising serious questions about the team’s readiness for the global stage.

Missed AFCON, But World Cup Qualification Secured

Despite overseeing a successful World Cup qualifying campaign — where Ghana topped their group with eight wins, one draw, and only one loss in 10 matches — Addo’s tenure was marred by the team’s failure to qualify for the recent Africa Cup of Nations. That setback likely contributed to growing pressure on the coaching staff, even as qualification for the World Cup provided a temporary reprieve.

Addo’s Second Stint Ends Abruptly

This was Addo’s second stint in charge of the Black Stars. He previously served as interim head coach in 2022, leading the team at the previous World Cup, where Ghana was eliminated in the group stage. His return to the role was seen as an attempt to bring continuity and experience, especially given his background as a former Borussia Dortmund youth coach and scout.

No Replacement Named Yet

The GFA has not disclosed the reasons behind Addo’s sacking nor announced a successor. With the World Cup just under three months away, the urgency to appoint a new head coach and stabilize the squad is paramount. Ghana will face Panama in their opening match on June 17 as part of Group L, a group that also includes Croatia and England.

As the countdown to the tournament begins, the Black Stars are now left searching for leadership at a critical juncture, hoping to avoid a repeat of past early exits and restore confidence within the team and its supporters.
