How Mauricio Pochettino, a '200%' Argentine, Embraced America

From Argentine Ranch to World Cup Coach

Mauricio Roberto Pochettino Trossero, the son of a third-generation cattle farmer in Argentina, has led the U.S. men's national team to the World Cup round of 16. Despite his deep Argentine roots, Pochettino has embraced American culture through sports, music, and food, forging a unique connection with the team and nation.

A Cultural Immersion

"It’s difficult now to see myself living in another place," Pochettino said, reflecting on his journey since taking charge in 2024. He attended college football games, ate at Chick-fil-A, and even delivered a ceremonial first pitch at a Seattle Mariners game. "I am 200% Argentine," he emphasized, "but I enjoy being part of this amazing project."

Inspiration from American Sports

Pochettino drew parallels between the U.S. national team and the 1980 Olympic hockey team depicted in the film Miracle. "We don’t need the best players, we need the right players," he said, echoing the philosophy of coach Herb Brooks. His admiration for American sports culture extended to attending NFL, NBA, and NHL games.

Connecting with Players and Fans

Players like Christian Pulisic and Tim Ream praised Pochettino’s openness. "He’s embraced American culture while adding his own flair," said Ream. Pochettino’s efforts to learn country music and chant "U-S-A" have endeared him to fans. "He’s really in tune with it," Pulisic said.
