McLaren's Baku upgrade delivers despite repairs and track mismatch
McLaren rolled out one of its most substantial updates of the season at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, and although the debut was not as clean as previous packages, the team left Baku reassured that the new parts worked as intended.
The Woking outfit arrived on the shores of the Caspian Sea with a major upgrade, but its introduction did not go entirely to plan. Unlike the smoother rollouts of earlier development steps, the Baku package required some remedial work after the opening day of practice.

Despite the early hiccup, McLaren was satisfied that the changes brought the improvements they sought. "The team was satisfied that the changes brought the improvements they sought," the team's assessment noted, pointing to encouraging signs hidden beneath a difficult weekend on paper.
From the outside, judging the scale of the gain was far from straightforward. The nature of the Baku street circuit was fundamentally unsuited to the McLaren's characteristics. The long Caspian 'straight' punished the car's short gearing, while the slow, short corners did little to play to the MCL's strength in long, fast sweepers.
That mismatch meant the upgrade's true potential was obscured by the track itself, leaving the headline lap times to understate what the team believes is genuine progress. With more conventional circuits ahead on the calendar, McLaren will be hoping the encouraging signs glimpsed in Baku translate into clearer rewards.
