Hemp ends long WSL goal drought with brace as Manchester City sink Liverpool 4-2

Hemp adds goals to her repertoire

Lauren Hemp has long been the WSL's premier creator — the leading assist-provider in both 2023-24 and 2024-25, and the supplier of the joint-second highest number of assists last season — but goals were not coming regularly for the England winger, who had not scored in the WSL since last November. That changed decisively on Friday night, when she found the net twice in Manchester City's 4-2 win over Liverpool.

Hemp nearly had a hat-trick, too, only for an early rising strike to be tipped over the bar by the Liverpool goalkeeper Khiara Keating.

The City manager Andrée Jeglertz heaped praise on his winger, whose energy and appetite for the game have clearly made an impression since his arrival.

"She's an amazing player. I don't know what she's made of, because she just loves to be on the field and looks like she has so much energy. She's a game-changer," Jeglertz told Sky Sports.

Victory kept City top of the table with nine points from their opening three matches, where Hemp's all-round threat — now with goals added to her assist repertoire — looks central to their strong start.
