The opening round of the new-look Champions League has been digested by data, with a supercomputer crunching Matchday 1 results to project how the final 36-team league-phase table is likely to look come the end of the campaign.

Under the Champions League's revamped format, every club plays eight different opponents in a single league phase before the knockout rounds begin, making early results more consequential than ever. With the first set of fixtures now in the books, simulation models have been run thousands of times to estimate the most probable final standings.

The predictions weigh each club's performance on Matchday 1, underlying statistics, squad quality and fixture difficulty across the remaining matchdays to map out the most likely path to the top eight — the clubs that advance automatically — as well as those expected to settle for a play-off berth between ninth and 24th.

While supercomputer projections are inherently probabilistic and can shift dramatically as the league phase unfolds, the early simulations provide a useful temperature check on which heavyweights are trending toward a comfortable passage and which established sides may be left sweating over qualification heading into the final rounds of group-stage fixtures.

The model will be refined after each round of matches, with updated simulations expected to sharpen the picture of Europe's elite as the road to the final takes shape.
