Mercedes lead both championships but reliability threatens to undo 2026 revival

The Silver Arrows have speed — but too many failures

Mercedes have made the strongest start to the 2026 season of any team, leading the constructors’ championship by 79 points over Ferrari at the halfway stage. The new W17 has delivered regular podiums and victories, but reliability problems have repeatedly denied George Russell and Kimi Antonelli valuable points.

Mercedes Formula 1 team half-term report

Mercedes opened the campaign with a dominant one-two finish in Australia. Russell won there and later added victory in Austria, while Antonelli produced an outstanding run of five wins across China, Japan, Miami, Canada and Monaco before returning to the top step in Belgium.

Antonelli leads Russell by 59 points and holds a 7-4 advantage in both qualifying and race head-to-head results. He has taken six wins to Russell’s two, while at least one Mercedes driver has finished on the podium at every round so far.

Antonelli’s triumph in Monaco was a particular highlight. After finishing three laps down at the previous year’s race, the Italian controlled the event through two Safety Car periods and a red flag, holding off Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton and demonstrating the maturity Mercedes believe can carry him into a title challenge.

Russell’s retirement from the Canadian Grand Prix represented the team’s low point. After taking pole for both the Sprint and the main race, he was leading when his power unit failed after 30 laps. The result compounded earlier frustrations over a lack of pace and left him with a significant deficit to his team-mate.

Ferrari have also improved through a series of upgrades, and Lewis Hamilton sits between the two Mercedes drivers in the championship, just nine points ahead of his former team-mate Russell. Mercedes therefore face a clear task for the rest of the year: solve the mechanical problems, help Russell regain consistency and continue developing Antonelli into a championship contender.

The team’s advantage remains substantial, but the report warns that a lead can disappear quickly if retirements continue. Mercedes’ speed has put both titles within reach; reliability will determine whether the team can hold them.
