Sri Lanka Appoints Gary Kirsten as New Head Coach Ahead of 2027 Cricket World Cup

In a major development for Sri Lankan cricket, former India World Cup-winning coach Gary Kirsten has been named the new head coach of the Sri Lanka national cricket team. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) confirmed the appointment, stating that Kirsten will officially take charge from April 15, 2026, on a two-year contract.

Gary Kirsten, former India coach and World Cup winner, appointed as Sri Lanka's new head coach

Kirsten succeeds Sanath Jayasuriya, the former Sri Lankan captain, who stepped down after the team's disappointing Super Eight exit in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026. During that tournament, Kirsten was seen in a consultancy role with the Namibia national team, further showcasing his global involvement in cricket development.

A Legacy of Success

The 56-year-old South African brings a wealth of international experience, both as a player and a coach. As an opener, he played 101 Tests and 185 ODIs for South Africa. However, his coaching legacy truly stands out—most notably, leading the Indian national team to victory in the 2011 Cricket World Cup. Under his guidance, India also reached the No. 1 spot in the ICC Test rankings during his tenure.

After India, Kirsten coached his home nation, South Africa, for two years. In April 2024, he briefly served as the white-ball head coach of Pakistan, though his tenure ended prematurely due to reported differences with the board and players. Despite this, his reputation remains intact, particularly in the franchise circuit.

IPL Pedigree and Future Challenges

Kirsten has been a pivotal figure in the Indian Premier League (IPL), having worked with Royal Challengers Bengaluru and later with Gujarat Titans. As batting coach, he played a crucial role in the Titans’ title win during their debut season in 2022.

His most pressing assignment with Sri Lanka will be the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027, set to be hosted across South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Sri Lanka will be aiming for direct qualification and a strong resurgence on the global stage. Kirsten’s experience in high-pressure tournaments will be vital in rebuilding the team’s confidence and performance.

This appointment follows SLC’s recent announcement of Jamie Siddons as head coach of the Sri Lanka women’s national team, indicating a broader restructuring of the country’s cricket coaching framework under new leadership.
