Williams confirm Albon commitment as Thai driver opts to 'stick rather than twist' through 2027
Albon commits to a sixth year at Grove
Williams have confirmed that Alex Albon will continue to race for the squad in 2027, extending his record-breaking stay with the team. The Thai driver first joined Williams back in 2022 following a year on the sidelines as a reserve driver for Red Bull, and has since become the driver with the most starts in the team's history.

A tough season prompts the question
The 2026 campaign has not turned out the way Williams or their drivers Albon and Carlos Sainz had hoped, after the squad finished a superb P5 last year. The car was overweight and underdeveloped at the start of 2026 and has since spent most of its time scrapping in the midfield. They are currently ninth of 11 teams.
Both Albon and Sainz had multi-year deals believed to contain clauses allowing them to leave at the end of the year. Boss James Vowles considers Albon one of the "best drivers on the grid" and has seen first-hand how he maximises a car in both good and bad times.
Why stick rather than twist?
Keeping hold of Albon considering the team's current plight is a shot in the arm for Vowles. For Albon, he considered his options but the market has been a bit stuck — he and his management could not see something definitely better than what they have. At least he knows what he is working with at Williams, having seen them bounce back from struggles before.
"Since joining Atlassian Williams F1 Team in 2022, the transformation this team has made is difficult to put into words," Albon commented. "One tough year doesn't tell the full picture, and it only gives me more motivation to keep building and pushing together with the factory and our fans to achieve great things. Our story is not over yet, so my full focus now is on doing whatever it takes to get us back up the grid."
He spoke of how the team "needed this tough moment to really accelerate some of the aggressive plans to fix some core problems within the car that have plagued us for years" — a big show of faith in Vowles and his vision.
A milestone-laden stay
Albon became the driver to record the most starts for Williams at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, his 96th race with the historic outfit, overtaking previous record holder Nigel Mansell. The 30-year-old then reached his 100th Grand Prix with Williams four rounds later in Hungary. He currently sits in P16 of the drivers' standings on five points.

What it means going forward
With the relevant options in his contract triggered, Albon will race on into 2027. An upgrade package is planned for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, and the squad will hope for better in the second half of the season. Vowles added: "Alex has been a leader of this transformation project since day one and we have plenty of unfinished business that we are determined to achieve." If Williams deliver next year, there is no reason the partnership will not continue; if not, with more seats expected to open for 2028, Albon will have more options.
