West Indies name India tour squads as Kamil Pooran earns maiden T20I call-up

West Indies have announced their squads for the limited-overs tour of India, recalling opener John Campbell for the three-match ODI series and handing Kamil Pooran his maiden T20I call-up.

The tour will feature three ODIs and five T20Is between September 27 and October 17, with matches scheduled across eight cities. Shai Hope will captain both 15-member squads.

Campbell returns, Hetmyer rested for ODIs

Campbell is back in the ODI setup after missing West Indies’ final two matches against New Zealand because of a hamstring injury. The squad also includes 19-year-old batter Jewel Andrew, who replaces Ackeem Auguste while Auguste continues his rehabilitation following surgery.

Shimron Hetmyer has been left out of the ODI squad after Cricket West Indies granted him an “extended recovery period” following the Caribbean Premier League. He remains part of the team’s 50-over plans and will join the group for the T20I series, which begins on October 6.

“Playing against the top team in the world presents us with a chance to fine tune and improve our performances as an ODI team which has seen quality performances across the cycle,” head coach Daren Sammy said.

Pooran rewarded after strong CPL campaign

Pooran’s selection follows an impressive debut Caribbean Premier League season for Saint Lucia Kings. The right-handed opener scored 273 runs in eight innings at a strike rate of about 159, averaging 39, and has been included in the five-match T20I squad alongside recalled batter Quentin Sampson and all-rounder Keemo Paul.

Jason Holder, an established figure in the T20I setup, has been rested. West Indies are seeking to build a settled group ahead of the next T20 World Cup after their recent series victory over Sri Lanka.

“We are looking to build on the momentum from our series win against Sri Lanka, with the long-term goal of developing a strong core of players ahead of the next T20 World Cup,” Sammy said.

World Cup qualification backdrop

The first two ODIs, in Thiruvananthapuram on September 27 and September 30, will conclude the automatic qualification phase for the 2027 ICC Men’s ODI World Cup. West Indies cannot finish in an automatic qualification place and will instead have to compete in a qualification tournament next year.

Sammy said the India series would provide a valuable test against the world’s top-ranked ODI and T20I side while allowing the selectors to assess players in important roles. The West Indies squad is scheduled to leave the Caribbean on September 21 and arrive in Thiruvananthapuram on September 23.
