USMNT Striker Patrick Agyemang Injured in Derby Clash, Raises World Cup Concerns
United States men’s national team striker Patrick Agyemang was stretchered off the pitch during Derby County’s Championship fixture against Stoke City on Monday in a worrying incident that could impact his chances of making the USMNT’s 2026 World Cup squad.
The 25-year-old forward jumped to contest for a high ball late in the first half but landed awkwardly, immediately signaling distress. He was substituted in the 41st minute and replaced by Jadon Banel as Derby County confirmed the injury via a club statement.
Agyemang had recently re-emerged as a key contender for a spot in Mauricio Pochettino’s national team setup, earning 65 minutes of game time across the USMNT’s March friendlies against Belgium and Portugal. Those appearances came after a seven-month absence from international duty, during which he last featured in the 2025 Gold Cup final and semi-final in July.
For Derby, the forward has been instrumental this season, making 37 league appearances and scoring 10 goals as the club fights for a playoff berth. Ahead of Monday’s match, Derby sat in eighth place, just three points behind Wrexham in the final playoff position.
World Cup Roster Implications
According to analyst Paul Tenorio, Agyemang had begun to overtake Ricardo Pepi in the USMNT’s striker depth chart. While Pepi played only 20 minutes during the March window, Agyemang logged 65 minutes and showcased improved physicality and technical ability, leveraging his 6ft 4in (193cm) frame effectively in the demanding English Championship.
With Folarin Balogun of Monaco expected to lead the line as the starting No. 9, the competition for backup striker roles is fierce, including Agyemang, Pepi, and Coventry City’s Haji Wright. Unless Pochettino opts to take four strikers to the World Cup, the decision could now be made easier by injury—though at a cost to team depth.
A prolonged absence would be a significant blow to the USMNT’s attacking options ahead of the global tournament, removing a physically imposing forward who had recently demonstrated strong form both domestically and internationally.
