Verstappen Braces for 'Surprises' as Red Bull Target Improvements at Monaco GP

Cautious Optimism in Monte Carlo

Max Verstappen has voiced a mix of caution and hope as Red Bull prepares for the upcoming Monaco Grand Prix. Following a podium finish in Canada, the Dutchman is mindful that the narrow streets of Monaco leave no room for error, stating, "I don't know how the car is going to feel tomorrow."

Addressing Technical Weaknesses

Despite securing P3 in Canada—benefiting from the struggles of McLaren and Mercedes—the RB22 continues to battle issues with bouncing and drivability. Verstappen highlighted that while the car has performed adequately in low-speed sections, the challenging nature of Monaco's surface remains a concern.

"Monaco can always give you some surprises, but realistically, from my side, we've been okay in the low-speed but at the same time, here, you need to be good on the bumps and the kerbs, which is where we're not that great," Verstappen admitted.

The Silver Lining of the Street Circuit

Interestingly, the specific characteristics of the Monaco circuit may actually play into Red Bull's hands. Verstappen noted that the lack of high-speed corners—an area where the RB22 has struggled recently—could hide some of the car's performance deficits.

Verstappen emphasized the need for overall improvement, stating: "You want to improve in every area. You want more grip, you want more power, you want better braking efficiency, you want the tyres to operate in a better window... I think, looking at Montreal, we're definitely lacking in the straights, but also in the corners."

Team Dynamics and Stability

Beyond the technical aspects, Verstappen touched upon the internal atmosphere at Red Bull following last season's reshuffles, which saw Laurent Mekies appointed as Team Principal. The driver expressed confidence in the current direction of the team, noting that the feeling is positive and that everyone is working cohesively toward their shared goals.

"The feeling is good in the team," he summarized. "Everyone is working well together and we're all heading in the same direction."
