Terland and Medina fire Manchester United to first WSL win of the season

United finally get their season moving

Manchester United claimed their first Women’s Super League victory of the 2026-27 season on Sunday, beating West Ham 2-1 at the Progress with Unity Stadium. The result ended a three-match winless start and gave Eva Olid her first league victory in charge.

Manchester United players Elisabeth Terland and Andrea Medina

Terland strikes early

United needed only nine minutes to take control. Elisabeth Terland rose above the West Ham defence to head Anna Sandberg’s inviting corner into the net.

West Ham had opportunities to respond, with Viviane Asseyi wasting two chances to equalise. At the other end, Ella Toone tested goalkeeper Constance Picaud-Inconnu from distance, while Picaud-Inconnu also made an outstanding save to tip Hanna Lundkvist’s header over the crossbar.

Medina delivers the decisive moment

Andrea Medina hit the woodwork early in the second half before forcing a series of saves from West Ham’s goalkeeper. Her persistence was rewarded in the 72nd minute when, after her first effort was blocked by Saki Kumagai, she found the top-right corner with the follow-up.

Medina’s goal was her first for Manchester United. She also led the team for chances created, crosses, touches in the opposition box and duels won, underlining her influence on a dominant performance.

West Ham threaten late

United were unable to add a third goal and were made to pay for their failure to kill off the contest. Asseyi was brought down inside the penalty area by Anna Sandberg and converted the resulting spot-kick, sending Phallon Tullis-Joyce the wrong way.

The late pressure ultimately came to nothing, however, as United held on for a deserved victory. They finished with 15 shots and an expected-goals figure of 1.67, compared with West Ham’s nine attempts and 1.13 xG.

The win extended Manchester United’s unbeaten league run against West Ham to 13 matches, a sequence that now stands at nine victories and four draws. Terland’s goal also continued her strong record in the competition: only Khadija Shaw has scored more WSL headed goals since Terland made her debut in September 2022.
